Why FreeAgent users need a closer look at receipt capture
FreeAgent has strong penetration among UK sole traders and small practices, particularly those who value its straightforward invoicing and tax estimate features over the heavier feature set of Xero or QuickBooks. It comes with its own Smart Capture tool for scanning receipts, which works reasonably well for clean, standard receipts photographed under good conditions.
Where Smart Capture starts to struggle is volume and variety. A sole trader submitting the odd fuel receipt is a different problem to a small practice processing receipts across a dozen FreeAgent clients, some of whom send crumpled till receipts, faded thermal paper, or receipts photographed at an angle on a phone with a cracked screen. That gap is where a dedicated extraction layer like Receiptflow adds real value, without asking the practice to move off FreeAgent at all.
